TOPS computer system platform
TOPS is written in the powerful and efficient language of C. The system was developed for many years on industry-standard Unix machines. In recent years a transformation has taken place onto open source Linux machines running MySQL databases. This platform was chosen primarily for its excellent stability but also carries price and operational advantages over some of the alternatives. This means that our customers receive years of development and programming being run from the latest technology and hardware, a powerful combination.

Service maintenance contracts keep the system permanently updated and supported. As new requirements arise bespoke work can be discussed and written to order. Roe Computer Systems do not provide just a system, but a complete service.

TOPS in use
The TOPS system is modular and so every customer only pays for the parts of the system that they use. The modules do not run as different programs onscreen but as one cohesive unitary package. Customers can add addional modules at any time after installation and so our customers only pay for what they use.

Although the system is fully integrated into a single package any number of windows can be running at any one time and so any number of different modules can be kept open onscreen.

TOPS now runs with 2 interfaces, its standard terminal interface and an interface that is more familiar to Windows users. Its menus can be presented as a tree structure and pop-up screens are in the familiar format common to Windows programs. Toggling between the two formats requires just a single keystroke.

The complete computer solution
RCS also offers every office's computer solution. Most customers have managed central faxing, email and internet access via a proxy server provided, configured and maintained by RCS. Roe Computer Systems also has its own Thawte-certified domain name server onsite to support online requirements. In addition RCS can provide website design and maintenance if required.
Hardware
Roe Computer Systems can provide all hardware and time-costed into it is all the support involved in integrating it into the system. TOPS can support virtually any type of hardware that runs under windows and there is no limit to the size and capability of systems.

In the same way as there are software options, there are also hardware ones. Standard servers can be constructed from high-spec personal computers or alternatively Dell Raid servers can be provided. These have the added benefit of writing all data to 2 hard disks so if one fails it can be replaced with no interruption to the running of the system whatsoever.

Similarly there is a range of printers, pcs and terminals available so that every part of the system is built to suit its user.

In some cases existing hardware can be used to reduce set-up costs.

Hardware maintenance can be offered by RCS but it is preferred that separate hardware maintenance is taken out, for which RCS can recommend a reliable company. This makes RCS responsible for maintaining and updating the software and files on the system while a possibly local hardware specialist can maintain hardware integrity.

Help facilities, documentation and ease of use
RCS knows that if a customer cannot use a module then it may as well not be there. Prior to the installation of a new system a few key employees usually come to our offices and are trained how to use the system away from routine distractions. These members of staff can both train others within their own company and can be a source of help onsite.

In addition our own staff typically spend a few days onsite as the system goes live and so are around when help is likely to be needed most.

Interfaces are kept to a similar style to each other making screens intuitive and so new programs present few hurdles. In case of difficulty RCS' support is available during office hours.

A variety of both online and printed help facilities are available within the normal maintenance charge. More help can be provided if required and further training is always on offer.
